Meeting the Energy Needs of a "Turned on World"

22.10.2013  |  CNW

ConocoPhillips Canada Welcomes the Brightest Young Minds in Energy to the Calgary World Petroleum Council Youth Forum

CALGARY, Oct. 22, 2013 /CNW/ - Fueling the future is a challenge not for the faint of heart, but one that is accepted by the brightest young minds in the energy industry. During a meeting in Calgary at the 4th World Petroleum Council (WPC) Youth Forum, Oct. 22-25, these leaders of tomorrow will be exposed to what it will take to meet the world's growing need for sustainable, affordable energy.

ConocoPhillips Canada (CPC) is the title sponsor of the WPC Youth Forum, which brings together 20- to 35-year-old energy industry professionals from more than 50 countries.

"We are committed to mentoring the future leaders in our industry," said Ken Lueers, president, ConocoPhillips Canada. "We are extremely proud of our colleague Joanna Desjardins, who was instrumental in attracting this prestigious event for Calgary and for the tremendous job she has done as WPC Youth Forum Chair. Joanna and her team have put together an exceptional conference program with world class speakers and industry leading presenters."

Keynote speakers include Alberta Premier Allison Redford and Matt Fox, executive vice president of Exploration and Production for ConocoPhillips.

To encourage CPC young professionals to continue striving for excellence, the company is sponsoring 150 employees to attend as full conference delegates. Ten CPC industry innovators have also accepted invitations to make presentations. The company is also sponsoring a pre-conference tour to the Athabasca oil sands region including a visit to CPC's Surmont Phase One SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) project.

"This is the kind of leadership that is so essential to solving the world's energy challenges," said Renato Bertani, president of the World Petroleum Council. "Since its inception, the World Petroleum Congress has worked to discover new sustainable solutions for an energy hungry world."

Calgary is set to welcome the delegates just four months after the worst natural disaster in city history. In response, ConocoPhillips donated $1 million to the flood relief effort and ConocoPhillips Canada staff volunteered thousands of hours helping their neighbours in need.

On Oct. 21, ConocoPhillips Canada was named one of Canada's Top 100 for 2014. This is a significant achievement for CPC that builds on momentum the company has established as a Top Employer for Young People in the previous two years.

About the World Petroleum Council

The World Petroleum Council (WPC) is the world's premier oil and gas organization, with over 65 member countries representing over 95 percent of global oil and gas production. The WPC covers all aspects of the petroleum sector and has a mandate to promote the responsible management of the world's oil and gas resources. Given the need to attract new talent to the industry and build the next generation of leaders, the WPC created a focus on young professionals in the industry through the creation of an International Youth Committee, led and directed by "youth" (young professionals ages 20-35). The Canadian WPC Youth Committee successfully bid for and was awarded the privilege to host the 4th WPC Forum in Calgary during the past World Petroleum Congress in Doha, Qatar in December 2011.
